Introduction to the Advocacy Roadmap
What is it?
The FT3 Roadmap is a toolkit designed to empower and equip PM champions to accelerate their advocacy efforts by guiding them through the process of identifying key stakeholders, assessing readiness, gathering evidence, and effectively packaging insights to drive change in their specific health systems.
Who is it for?
This toolkit is designed to be used by all patient advocates and precision medicine champions, regardless of previous advocacy experience. This toolkit has everything at hand to develop advocacy skills in precision medicine. Complete the self-assessment to understand your current advocacy stage and find tailored steps to support your progress.
Why was this tool developed?
Precision medicine is still not a reality for many patients. This toolkit was created to equip PM champions with the knowledge and practical guidance on how to effectively advocate for, address, and overcome barriers to precision medicine.
How does this roadmap strengthen your advocacy efforts?
This roadmap will equip you to explore your health system to advocate for better health outcomes:
- With the right evidence
- With the right approach and in the right place with the right people
- To advocate for better health outcomes
Built for precision medicine advocates
Patient Advocates
Individuals and organisations representing patient communities who want to drive policy change and improve access to precision medicine in their disease area and country.
Healthcare Professionals
Clinicians and researchers who want to engage with policymakers, build evidence, and translate scientific insights into system-level advocacy efforts.
Policy & Access Teams
Teams working within healthcare organisations or industry who need a structured framework to map, engage, and influence decision-makers across health systems.
The Roadmap for Comprehensive Access is not just a work plan, but the strategic engine that transforms our inclusion goals into measurable realities. It is a tool that provides us with the clarity and precision needed to overcome barriers to access and create a sustainable impact in the communities we serve.
Using tools like the Country and Condition Card has helped many hematologists in Morocco understand where labs meet international standards. For many, it was the first time a patient organization was actively supporting healthcare providers — helping orient patients to the right labs and centers. This tool has proven valuable at congresses and in clinical settings, and healthcare providers have been more than willing to use them.
Successful advocacy means bringing the right people to the table and engaging them throughout the entire process, from co-identifying challenges to co-developing and implementing solutions that improve access to personalized medicine. The journey toward ensuring patients receive the right treatment at the right time is rarely linear, so my biggest piece of advice is to remain consistent and persistent. Meaningful system change takes time, collaboration, and a willingness to keep moving forward, irrespective of the system-level barriers.
Success in ensuring equitable access depends on flawless technical execution. The comprehensive roadmap and its essential tools provide us with a solid framework to guide our decisions and ensure that we fulfill our mission.
Be patient, consistent and persistent and keep your eye on the long game.
As advocates, we have to connect with the right people, have many meetings, just to try to find solutions for patients, to create some space for patients, and especially for the patient voice to be well represented. Especially in LMICs, this might be the biggest first hurdle to overcome.
